Remember which side it is because you're going to need to choose a pump to match up with it. Take a moment to try opening it too - it might be with your key, it could be a lever inside your car or you might just need to press on the panel covering it.
Don't do this for the first time on the petrol station forecourt. You will be beeped if you set up camp there. As you drive into the petrol station, go very slow. It's not unlikely that you'll have to wait for people to move so you can go to the pump that matches the side your petrol cap is on.
Pull up next to the pump, about half a metre out and with the nose of your car lining up with the end of the pump. The pump's hose is quite long but making sure you're far forward enough means you won't have to stretch awkwardly.
Get out of the car, taking your keys and money with you, and shut the door. Go round the pump side of your car to your fuel cap. If you need your key to unlock it, just put it in and twist to the left. It should come off easily, and you can put it somewhere safe like on the raised edge of the pump.
If you don't need a key, you'll usually just flip the panel open like a little door. Then you'll see the actual fuel cap, which you either twist open or pop up like your windscreen fluid cap. However many times you've filled up your car, always take a second to really, deeply think about the fuel you're about to put in your car. The wrong fuel can play absolute havoc with your engine and cost you a packet. Diesel is usually black, petrol is usually green but will be labelled unleaded.
Many petrol stations will also offer premium versions of the fuel you want, which are more expensive but wouldn't hurt your car if you put them in accidentally. If the pump has a card machine, you don't have to go into the petrol station to pay.
No humans. Put your card in the card slot and enter your pin when it asks. All cars run on the same type of gas. One of the many different skills that can be leveled and used in Project Zomboid is the Mechanics skill. This skill makes it possible to perform different mechanical operations on your vehicle. In this screen, you can check which parts are installed and in what condition they are. You can also interact with most of these parts. If you have the right tools and mechanical expertise you can swap and change parts from other cars into your own car.
You can even remove parts and leave them off if you wish. For some of the operations you will need to have read the auto manual which gives your character information on how to work on the car. Standard, commercial and performance manual. To work on a car and exchange parts you will have to read the manual for that type of car. As this character was a mechanic by trade before the apocalypse began, they already start with the knowledge on how to fix and work on cars. You can find them where most books are, in bookcases of residential and commercial buildings.
The back room of this store has boxes and shelves absolutely brimming with books. This one is not really going to be a shock to anyone. The way that you upgrade and gain experience in the mechanics skill is by performing mechanical task. Be it changing a tire or exchanging a light bulb, every car related action you take will give your character experience in the mechanics skill level.
Depending on your current skill level you will need a different type of book to gain the experience boost. By holding the V key down on your keyboard whilst in a vehicle you will open up the vehicle radial menu.
This wheel menu will make it easier to do things whilst in a vehicle. For example, you will have to open up this menu in order to attempt to sleep in your vehicle. You can press up on the D-PAD whilst using a controller to access this menu. Some vehicles will have more options as well, such as the police and emergency vehicles having a siren which can be turned on and off.
As seen in the above section on using the vehicle radial menu in Project Zomboid you can change seats in a car by holding the V key down whilst inside a vehicle. Then, select the option at the top of the radial menu. Hot-wiring will however, mean that if you are playing in multiplayer anybody will be able to access and drive the car. There is no way to undo a hot-wired car. Click here for a guide to hot-wiring in Project Zomboid. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
